LISTS OF PAST U.S. CHAMPIONS
|
The table below represents a pretty good start at listing all of the
U.S. Eastern Ski Jumping Champions. I have hopes of filling in the 1950's but it will probably never be possible to
create a definitive list -- the early winners (1920-1933) are just too hard to find, and
for recent years, we don't have information about who took the same start and
who used higher starts. But we shall never have a list if we don't try so here
we go.
Please chime in if you have additions or corrections to this list. And we'll
welcome the help if you want to spend some time digging around in a library, in
a newspaper archive, or on the internet. Can anybody help us to fill the many empty spaces? Thanks!

Notice that in the early years, a Class B champion was crowned, but that was
eventually dropped. Then in more recent years we recognized a ladies champion.
The far right column serves both of these, changing along the way.

Notes:
As you see, the Eastern Championships have been held in Salisbury, CT for many
years now, with no change in sight. The last time the event was hosted elsewhere
was in 1983 when Dana Zelenakis was heading up the Brattleboro program and the
Harris Hill competition. Dana spoke up at the Eastern spring meeting and asked
"Why does Salisbury always get the Eastern Championships? I'd like to have them
in Brattleboro. We agreed and so it was, just in 1983.
*Several times, starting in 1998 (also in 1970), the top Junior skier outscored the best Senior and
was therefore named Eastern Champion and got his name on the big silver bowl.
These junior winners are marked with an asterisk (*).
#In 2012, rather than establishing a Senior B Class, organizers grouped Chris Jones and
Julian Holland in the Masters class, giving them a higher start than the Open class,
even though they had not reached age 30. This was merely a convenience and Mark Breen
was named Eastern Masters Champion.
@We know of no official ruling on whether the Eastern crown can be held by a
foreign skier or by a U.S. skier from a different division of USSA.
The 1988 start list included several Europeans and U.S. Ski Team jumpers.
Norbert Moertle was the top jumper while Bob Holme was top U.S. finisher and
Greg Boester was the best Eastern skier.
A similar situation arose in 1987 when Dean Hancock was the top Eastern skier.
In 1990, a flock of Norwegians jumped in the Masters Class, on their way to
the first International Masters Championships in Lake Placid.
Larry Welch was the top U.S. jumper in Masters Class.
In 1938 and 1939 the Olesen brothers were champions in the professional category.
The 1939 championships in Winsted, CT were held on the Colebrook River Hill.
