End of an Era
No Fourth of July Competition in Lake Placid

In the summer of 1948, ski jumping enthusiasts in Lake Placid organized the first Fourth of July ski jumping competition. [
Read about it.] The meet became a tradition, continuing for more than 30 years with crushed ice spread on the 40 meter jump. The string was broken during construction of the new 1980 Olympic Jumps, though they tried unsuccessfully to jump the 18 meter hill on a plastic carpet intended for cross country practice. After the Olympics, plastic was installed on the P-70 and 40 meter hills and July 4 jumping resumed on the 70. This continued for another 30 years until Steamboat Springs scheduled a high level training camp and competition for the holiday week. The Lake Placid competition suffered and withered until finally, in 2013, no July 4 meet was scheduled. Sad!
